NOTES
1). Christopher Gadsden was a Delegate from South Carolina t o the Constitutional Convention. He was born in Charlesto n and attended schools in England. Employed in a commercia l house in Philadelphia 1742 45, he was a delegate to the S tamp Act Congress that met in New York in 1765 and a Membe r of the First Continental Congress in Philadelphia 1774 76 . He served as an officer in the Continental Army 1776178 3 and participated in the defense of Charleston in 1780. H e attained the rank of Brigadier General. He served as Sout h Carolina s governor 1778 1780 and was elected Governor i n 1781, but declined. He died in Charleston 15 September, 1 805 and is buried in St. Philip s Churchyard.
