NOTES
1). John Samuel Cureton was a student at The Citadel when th e Civil War broke out. At 18, he immediately enlisted a s a private under Captain John D. White on 8 April, 1861 i n Lancaster, South Carolina. He served in Charleston unti l 11 April 1862, when he joined Company H, 4th Regimental C avalry, known as the Catawba Rangers, under Captain John C antzon Foster.
