NOTES
1). bobspu.ged BIO Ernest PAINTER was the son of Howard F. PAINTER, who married Theresa MILLER GILCHRIST in 1907. Ernest married Theresa s daughter, Cecile. Family stories continue that Ernest was killed sometime in the 1940s in a construction accident...the collapse of a scaffolding caused him to receive fatal injuries in a fall. Written response to a query made by compiler in 1997 to the Euclid Avenue United Methodist Church, Zanesville, brought information that Ernest died sometime during WWII, the result of a fall into a vat of molten metal at his place of work, A rmco Steel Company in Zanesville. In December, 1997, Mary Alice GILCHRIST, daughter of Byron B. GILCHRIST, wrote of her memories of visiting the PAINTER family in Zanesville in her youth. ...I do remember they had a parrot that talked, the dinner table was set with pretty china and silver, and we went to see a Blondie and Dagwood movie... ...The house on Dresden Road was a square type with an upstairs... ...BG Byron Gilchrist says that Cecile was a real looker in her younger days... ...As I recall, Ernest was a big lumbering sort of man and not very good looking. He traveled a great deal in his work and was not at home, I don t think, when we visited Zanesville. He did visit us in South Bend. It seems that earlier, probably during the Depression or before, he had been out of work and decided to to go back to school. He graduated from college, then, probably as an engineer. He may have gone to Ohio State, but I m not sure. I think he was supposed to be very intelligent. I really don t remember knowing much about his death. The molten metal story is sort of vague for me, but so horrid I may have shut it away. I just don t know... In February, 1997, Jim GILCHRIST, brother of compiler, made telephone contact with Howard PAINTER in Zanesville, OH, who proved to be a nephew of Ernest and grandson of Howard F. PAINTER. Mr. PAINTER was able to inform Jim of the relationship between Ernest and Howard s father, Luther PAINTER, both sons of Howard F. He also informed Jim that his brother, Raymond, a second son of Luther PAINTER, still resides in Zanesville, too. REF 1. Interview reports Virgil J. GILCHRIST dec d and Byron B. 2). bobspu.ged BIO Cecil as she was known by James GILCHRIST s family, had been reported in family stories, as the daughter of Theresa MILLER and a first husband. Documents showing Theresa s name at the time of her marriage to James GILCHRIST, as well as the 1900 Census which shows Theresa s parents name as MILLER , indicate that Theresa was either unmarried at the time of Cecile s birth or that Theresa had divorced her first husband and resumed the use of her maiden name. Compiler had hoped that the identity of Cecile s natural father might be given on her death certificate however, the father s name is given as James K. GILCHRIST there. On both the 1900 and 1910 census the latter after James GILCHRIST s death Cecile s surname is given as GILCHRIST. As of Oct. 1995, compiler has not found evidence that she was legally adopted by James nevertheless, she was born some 3 years before her mother married him. Family stories report that Cecile married Ernest PAINTER, whose father, Howard PAINTER, married the widow of James K. GILCHRIST in 1907. Documentation of this marriage has not been located as of Dec. 1997, however, death certificate reads Cecile D. PAINTER as does the cemetery record. The place of marriage is assumed to have been Muskingum Co., OH the time of her marriage would have been sometime after 1910. The death certificate contains the following data in addition to that given above Place of residence 3365 Dresden Road Rural Falls Twp. Deceased is a widow her age at the time of death was given as 72 years, 7 months and 4 days. The deceased husband s name is not given. The informant for the death certificate was Mrs. John SPEER Cecile s daughter, Louise . Mrs. SPEER s residence was given as Zanesville, O.The cause of death is given above, however conditions which gave rise to the cause specifies Chronic Myocarditis. Cecile died at Good Samaritan Hospital in Zanesville, but per the death certificate, she had been there only 1 hour and 20 minutes before her death. Time of death is given as 3 40 A. The physician attending was Stanford S. DAW, M.D., who reported that Cecile had been his patient since 1957. The funeral director was given as Harold N. BAUGHMAN, Baughman and Sons Funeral Home, Corner of Basin and Third Sts., Frazeysburg, Muskingum OHIO. Per efforts of compiler s brother, Jim GILCHRIST, to contact surviving members of the GILCHRIST or PAINTER families in Zanesville, compiler was able to submit a query to the Euclid Avenue United Methodist Church there. Response from Cindy BUCK, the church secretary, included the following information about Cecile GILCHRIST PAINTER his James K. GILCHRIST daughter, Cecile GILCHRIST married Ernest PAINTER lived next door to the Westview Grill on Dresden Road Ernest PAINTER died during WWII just before Christmas, he worked at Armco Steel and fell into a vat of molten metal Their daughter, Louise PAINTER married R.J. SPEAR very active in the church played the piano for the Sunday School and maybe for church before she was married... Ms. BUCK cites church records and Paul BOWERS, 617 Military Road, Zanesville, OH 43701 1532, as the sources of her information. In December, 1997, Mary Alice GILCHRIST, daughter of Byron B. GILCHRIST, wrote of her recollections of Cecile and her brother, Clyde ...The house on Dresden Road was a square type with an upstairs. It sat on a high bank as I remember many steep steps down to the street. By car we drove around to the back to go into the house on level ground. I don t think they used the front steps much. ... BG Byron Gilchrist says that Cecile was a real looker in her younger days. I remember her as somewhat tall 5 5 or 5 6 with dark hair and color, rather like a true brunette, probably. She seemed to me to have a good figure for her age. She certainly did not look like Clyde! ...Cecile and Clyde did not resemble each other in appearance in anyway, but they shared the same house on Dresden Road as long as they lived as far as I know...
